Screen Mirroring in Hotels: Everything Guests and Hotel IT Need to Know

Screen mirroring shows exactly what's on your phone, tablet or laptop screen on another display. In a hotel you can mirror to the room TV if it supports hospitality AirPlay or a similar service: scan the QR code on the TV, then choose Screen Mirroring. For streaming apps, casting from inside the app works better than mirroring.

What is screen mirroring?

Screen mirroring sends a live copy of your device's screen to a TV. Whatever you see, the TV shows: photos, a presentation, a website, a game. Your device does all the work and has to stay awake and on the same connection the whole time.

Casting is different. When you cast from an app like Netflix or YouTube, your phone tells the TV what to play and the TV fetches the stream itself. Your phone becomes a remote and can be used for other things, or even locked.

Rule of thumb: cast whenever the app has a Cast or AirPlay button. Mirror only for things that can't be cast.

Can you screen mirror to a hotel TV?

Often, yes, but not the way you do at home. Hotel TVs are locked down so guests can't see or reach each other's devices. That's why an iPhone's Screen Mirroring menu is usually empty in a hotel room until you pair.

Hotels that support it use hospitality versions of the standards:

  • AirPlay for hotels on supported LG and Samsung hospitality TVs. You scan a QR code on the TV to pair your iPhone or iPad with that room, then use Screen Mirroring or AirPlay as usual. The pairing is erased at check-out. On LG models this requires iOS or iPadOS 17.3 or later.
  • Google Cast for Android and Chrome, where mirroring support depends on the device and app.
  • The hotel's own casting platform on other TVs, for example through an HDMI device like InnCable.

How to mirror your iPhone to a hotel TV

  1. Turn on the TV and open the casting or AirPlay screen.
  2. Scan the QR code with your iPhone camera and confirm pairing.
  3. Open Control Center and tap Screen Mirroring, then pick your room's TV.
  4. To stop, open Control Center and tap Stop Mirroring.

If your room's TV doesn't appear, check that you completed the QR pairing and that your phone is on the hotel Wi-Fi if the TV screen says so.

How to mirror an Android phone to a hotel TV

Android mirroring varies by manufacturer. Where the hotel supports Google Cast, pair using the QR code on the TV, then use the Cast or Screen cast option in Quick Settings, or the Google Home app. Many Android phones' own mirroring features (for example Smart View) rely on Miracast, which most hotel TVs disable. Casting from the app is the more reliable route.

Why won't Netflix play when I mirror?

Streaming services protect their content with DRM. Many block it from being mirrored, so you'll hear sound but see a black screen, or get an error. Cast from inside the app instead.

Is screen mirroring safe in a hotel?

On a hospitality system, yes. Your device is paired only to your room's TV, other guests can't see it, and the pairing is deleted when you check out. Avoid plugging a personal streaming stick into a hotel TV or using unofficial apps; those can expose your accounts to the next guest if you forget to log out.

For hotels: should you offer screen mirroring?

Yes, particularly for business travellers who want to present, and families sharing photos. The requirements:

  • Room-level isolation, so each device reaches only one TV.
  • Automatic reset through the PMS at check-out.
  • Enough guest network capacity: mirroring is sent from the guest device over Wi-Fi, so it depends on in-room coverage. See HSIA planning.
  • Clear on-screen instructions, since most guests don't know the difference between mirroring and casting.

Innspire TV provides AirPlay 2 and Google Cast with QR pairing on supported Samsung and LG hospitality TVs and via InnCable on other TVs. Read more about hotel TV casting.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I see the hotel TV in my Screen Mirroring list?
Hotel TVs are hidden until you pair. Scan the QR code on the TV first.
Do I need to download an app to mirror to a hotel TV?
No, not on hospitality AirPlay or Google Cast systems. You use your phone's built-in features.
Can I use HDMI to connect my laptop to a hotel TV?
Sometimes. Many hotel TVs have an accessible HDMI input, but others lock it. Wireless mirroring avoids the cable.
Will the next guest be able to connect to my phone?
No. Pairings are erased at check-out.
