Hotel TV Casting: How AirPlay and Google Cast Work in Hotel Rooms

Hotel TV casting lets guests stream from their own phone, tablet or laptop to the in-room TV, using apps like Netflix, YouTube, Spotify and Disney+. The guest scans a QR code on the TV to pair privately with that one room, with no app to download and no login on the TV, and the pairing is erased automatically at check-out.

Why do hotels need casting?

Guests already pay for their own streaming. They don't want to type a Netflix password into a hotel TV with a remote, and they worry about forgetting to log out. Casting solves both: the content stays on the guest's device, and the TV only plays it. For the hotel, it removes the need to license a large on-demand catalogue and cuts "how do I get Netflix on the TV" calls to the front desk.

How does hotel casting work?

  1. The TV shows a QR code on the welcome screen or casting menu.
  2. The guest scans it with their phone camera. This pairs their device with that specific TV and room, not with every TV on the network.
  3. The guest opens any cast-enabled app and taps the Cast or AirPlay icon. Only their room's TV appears.
  4. At check-out, the pairing is deleted. The next guest can't see or reach the previous guest's device, and nothing is stored on the TV.

The key design point is isolation. On an ordinary home network, every Chromecast is visible to every phone. In a hotel, that would mean guests seeing, and casting to, TVs in other rooms. A proper hospitality casting system ties each device to one room.

Google Cast vs AirPlay in hotels: what's the difference?

Screen mirroringLimited, app-dependentYes, full screen mirroring
Hospitality supportBuilt into selected LG hospitality TVs (shown ISE 2025) and delivered by platforms on othersAirPlay for hotels on LG Pro:Centric TVs (webOS 5.0+) and Samsung hospitality TVs (announced June 2024)

On LG hospitality TVs, AirPlay needs iPhone Xs or later on iOS 17.3 or later (iPadOS 17.3 for iPads), and a server that talks to the PMS to end pairings at check-out.

Hotels should offer both. Guests arrive with a mix of iPhones and Android phones, and the split varies by market, so supporting only one shuts out a large share of them. [Optional: add Innspire's own iOS/Android casting split if we have it]

What can guests cast?

Any app with a Cast or AirPlay button: Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, Spotify, Apple Fitness+, Prime Video and thousands more. Some services restrict casting of protected (DRM) content through screen mirroring, so casting from inside the app is more reliable than mirroring the screen. See our guide to screen mirroring in hotels for the difference.

Is hotel casting secure?

It is when the system is built for hotels:

  • Room isolation: a guest device can reach only its own room's TV.
  • No credentials on the TV: the guest logs in on their own phone, never on the hotel screen.
  • Automatic reset: pairings, sessions and credentials are cleared at check-out through the PMS.
  • Network separation: TVs and guest devices sit on segmented networks managed by IT.

What does a hotel need for casting?

  • Supported hospitality Smart TVs (Samsung or LG, supported builds) or an HDMI device such as InnCable for other TVs.
  • A guest network able to carry the extra streaming load at peak hours (7–10:30 pm is typical). See HSIA planning.
  • PMS integration for automatic reset at check-out.

Casting with Innspire TV

Innspire TV includes Apple AirPlay 2 and Google Cast, paired by QR scan with no app to download. It is native on supported Samsung and LG hospitality TVs and available through InnCable on the rest of the fleet, so the whole property gets the same experience. Sessions and credentials clear at check-out. Innspire is a partner of Apple, Google, Samsung and LG.

Frequently asked questions

Can guests use Chromecast in a hotel room?
Yes, if the hotel offers hospitality casting. The guest scans a QR code on the TV to pair, then casts from any Cast-enabled app. Plugging in a personal Chromecast usually doesn't work because hotel TVs and networks are locked down.
Does AirPlay work on hotel TVs?
On supported LG and Samsung hospitality TVs, yes. The guest scans an on-screen QR code to connect their iPhone or iPad, and the pairing is erased at check-out.
Do guests need to download an app to cast?
No. They use the camera to scan the QR code and the apps they already have.
Can another guest see my phone or what I'm watching?
No. In a hospitality casting system each device is paired to one room only, and pairings are deleted at check-out.
Why won't some content play when I mirror my screen?
Some streaming services block protected content during screen mirroring. Casting from inside the app avoids this.
